Three years ago this spot was struck by a severe microburst, a powerful but narrowly focused downdraft caused by the meeting of hot moist air and cooler air, sort of like a thunderstorm. The trees for a radius of under a thousand feed were simply flattened. It looked like a bomb had gone off. Nothing was left but beaten brush, logs and a few naked snags standing amid the destruction. I photographed nearby last December. I was a bit heartbroken by the sight at the time, but subsequent visits have been a lesson in nature's regenerative capacities. Logs and snags still abound, but they now provide homes for bugs and food for woodpeckers. Bluebirds have nested nearby and green foliage is slowly moving its way up to the local canopy. Mansfield down the Jericho, then makes a sharp right turn not far downstream from this spot and heads north for the Lamoille River. This image is a Photoshop “photomerge” stitched together from seven exposures made by carefully swiveling the camera on the tripod. It is something I enjoy doing, although the panorama format is a bit extreme for the limited size of the image allowed on this photoblog. Maybe break out a magnifying glass. Or, in Firefox, just hit CTRL + a few times. Another issue is the limited color space of jpg images.
